Romanian Cave Bear Paw, Ursus Spelaeus
50,000 years old
A superb example of the paw of the cave bear species Ursus spelaeus. Found in the Carpathian mountains in the Brasov region of Romania.
These huge animals -which were bigger than the contemporary Brown Bear- lived during the Pleistocene epoch. They stood in excess of three meters and could weigh more than a ton. They are thought to have become extinct around 27,000 years ago.
