Probably the world's most familiar fossil with its distinctive spiral shape, ammonites are the remains of prehistoric shell fish.
Emerging some 200 million years ago, they died out around the time of the mass extinction which wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
Ammonite fossils are found over the majority of the globe, with their colour and texture corresponding to the local fossilising minerals. We have some beautiful varieties showcased here.
