Molar and jaw section from a Stegodon Trigonocephalus. Dating from the Pleistocene, Stegodon were some of the largest trunked animals of the Proboscidea order.
First appearing in the fossil record around11 million years ago, the Stegodon is thought to have become extinct in the late Pleistocene. Although the Stegodon is considered to be a sister group of the mammoth as well as the elephant, their teeth are quite distinctively different, with molars consisting of a series of low, roof-shaped ridges.
